Game 60: Coca-Cola Game of Health
Le Jeu de Sante. Canada: The Coca-Cola Company of Canada Ltd., 1934. Color print 42 x 44 cm. on two-panel folding board.
Ref. Ciompi/Seville 1066.
This game, admirably clear in its design, consists of a 100-space track, on which the favorable spaces are colored green and the unfavorable ones red. Each of these spaces is provided with a caption that refers to an action that is good, or bad, for one’s health. It is played with a single dice and a throw of 5 is needed to start. This indicates that its genesis is closer to Chutes and Ladders than to Goose and indeed it lacks any of the throw-doubling spaces of the latter game. There is, though, an equivalent of the death space, at 36: ”You have eaten green apples—return to zero.” Also, as in Goose, there is a space (45) where you lose a turn ”for being anxious and scowling.” The remaining instructions are to advance or go back: ”chewing your food perfectly” gets you on nicely but ”chewing a pencil full of germs” has the opposite effect. The reverse of the board lists a number of maxims for good health, ”Work hard and be cheerful” being the first. The different sources of nourishment are next listed: fat, minerals, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and water. ”Few of us drink enough water and it is here that pure, carbonated beverages are useful ... These liquids provide a level of energy greater than some of the other sources of nourishment … Coca-Cola is a pure and healthy carbonated liquid, made from pure ingredients in absolutely clean factories, which the Bureaux of Health have fully approved. No human hand touches Coca-Cola during its manufacture and each bottle is completely sterilised.... To win the game is a matter of chance. But in the game of health only a strict and regular observance of the rules laid down by your school will help you to gain and keep in good health.” It is interesting to see that Coca-Cola is being promoted with great care as a ”healthy” drink for young people rather than as a ”health drink.”
