Victoria&Albert Museum This game has a very plain design compared to other examples from the 19th century. It is a simple spiral race game, starting at The Grave of Venus and finishing at The Altar. Several of the playing spaces are illustrated. Some of these give directions for further movement, either forwards or backwards. The illustrations are all to do with the progress of a courtship leading – or not, as the case may be – to marriage. Examples of play include Salute leading to Smiles for forward movement, and Unworthiness leading to Rejection for backward. All the illustrated squares are titled. Historical context note. Rewards: forward movement. Forfeits: backward movement, start again. N°of Players: any Equipment required: markers, dice. Rules: INSTRUCTIONS Any number may play. Let each player in turn, throw the die, and move his disc the number of spaces it indicates, following directions of any significant space whereon he stops - he stopping on `Meeting' he should go on to `Acquaintance' and from `Acquaintance' to `Paying Attention' , or from `Rejection' to the beginning etc. Rules placement: right lower corner of board Descriptive line: Lithographed race game, "The Path to Matrimony", published in England in 1893. |
