Gioco di 75 caselle numerate. REGOLE: sul tavoliere. CASELLE: mute. REFERENZA 1 The Game of the North-Pole The achievements of Arctic explorers stimulated the production of several games, among them Chad Valley's Finding the Pole and the one reproduced here, issued by J. W. Spear in 1910. Inside the box lid the manufactures wrote: The North Pole Game is to the child what a cinematograph lecture by Sir Ernest Shackleton is to a grown-up. During the game all incidents of a voyage of Polar exploration are met, e.g. sturdily built whaler caught in the ice pack, landing party building snow hut, engaging eskimo for the journey, shooting Walrus and Seal, admiring the aurora borealis as it stretches athwart the sky. Here they are making a sledge dash for the pole, and at last planting the flag upon the untrod solitudes that surround the Axis of the Earth. It was offered to the wholesale trade in five editions ranging from four shillings and eightpence to fifty-two shillings per dozen. The objet of the game is to be the first player to reach N°75 and discover the North Pole. This is a game for 2, 3 or 4 players. Each player takes a differently coloured disc to represent an Arctic explorer. Players should throw a die to decide the order of play. Players start by putting their pieces on the starting place. They advance according to the number thrown with the die and place their pieces on the number indicated by the number of points obtained by the cast. Players landing on the squares with special instructions must carry them out, except where they refer to the payment of counters. The player who comes first to the Pole N°75 or beyond it, is the winner of the game. (LOVE Brian, pag. 64) |
