REFERENZA 1:
Race games having monkeys as the symbol of fortune in place of the geese developed in Germany during the second half of the 18th century. The early years of that century had seen the appearance in France of the singerie as a distinct genre in art, where the image of the playful monkey had instant appeal; whereas in previous centuriesthe monkey was seen as an allegory representing the foolishness of mankind. The Affenspiele were evidently derived directly from the Game of the Goose, as is demonstrated by the existence of pairs of games of closely similar format and design – compare Arch. n°1357, "Neues Gänse-Spiel", also by Renner. Both have a short track of only 30 spaces and are played with a single die.

Nürnberg, G.N. Renner, ca. 1830. Radierung. 407 x 335 mm. Sehr seltener Spielplan zu einem Würfelspiel; mittig die Vorführung einer Affendressur, in den Ecken tummeln sich weitere Affen. Auf 14 weiteren der insgesamt 30 Felder sind Affen bei Kunststücken zu sehen, werden diese Felder betreten muss der Spieler wieder von vorne beginnen oder ein Strafe zahlen - die Spielregeln sind unterhalb des Planes abgedruckt.
Georg Nikolaus Renner (1803-1854) war seit 1826 Kunsthändler und Verleger in Nürnberg. Ab 1837 wurde Friedrich Schuster sein Partner, von da ab hieß die Firma "Renner & Co" - das vorliegende Spiel muss also vorher entstanden sein. Mit der Verlagsnummer 221. - Tadelloses Exemplar eines schönen Beispiels des im 19. Jahrhundert enorm populären Affentheaters in u. a. Zirkusvorstellungen als Illustration für ein Gänsespiel, das nun hier zum Affenspiel wurde!
