James Lumsden & Son (publisher/printer; British; Male; 1783; foundation of company) Also known as James Lumsden & Son; Lumsden, James Address: 2d flat Craig's land, head of the Old-wynd (listed in Jones's Directory [of Glasgow trades], 1787) Biography Publisher, major Glasgow business best known for high quality children's books. Founded 1783 by James Lumsden the elder (retired 1810), known as James Lumsden & Son from c. 1800. The younger man (also James Lumsden, 1778-1856) held a number of public offices in Glasgow and was much involved in philanthropic activities; 1838, one of the founders of the Clydesdale Bank; 1843, Lord Provost of Glasgow; his statue stands outside the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow.
